Animals were maintained under controlled conditions (12 h light/dark cycle lights on at 0700 hours 22☒ ☌). The female experimental subjects were virgin Wistar rats acquired at 10-week-old from Charles River Laboratories. The male experimental subjects were the offspring (F0) of Wistar Han rats purchased from Charles River Laboratories (Lyon, France) that were bred in our animal house, as well as the offspring (F1) from F0 male and F0 females. To this end, we investigated whether the male offspring of peripubertally stressed males displayed increased aggression toward a female partner. Furthermore, we sought to evaluate whether biological factors could also account for the transfer of a behavioral profile of pathological aggression to an intimate partner across generations. To determine whether peripubertal stress would result in abnormal aggressive behavior against a female partner, males from both the stress and the control groups were individually paired with a female and left to cohabit in a home cage for 21 days. 16 In this model, fear was induced in a non-social context, which allowed the exclusion of potential vicarious social learning. To seek evidence for the contribution of biological factors to the intergenerational transmission of intimate partner violence, we selected an animal model (that is, devoid of human cultural connotations) whereby exposing male rats to fear-inducing experiences from juvenility to puberty (that is, the peripubertal period ranging from postnatal days P28–P42 subsequently referred to as peripubertally stressed rats) was shown to produce pathological aggression against males during adulthood. 9 Most of the studies directed at identifying risk factors at the biological level are cross-sectional studies focused mainly on demographics, live stressful experiences, 10, 11 mental disorders 12, 13 and substance abuse, 14, 15 remaining unclear whether those biological factors are the cause or correlated factors of the violence perpetrated by the abusive partner. Despite increasing evidence that early exposure to stress can affect the neurodevelopmental trajectories that influence an individual's behavior in adulthood, 6, 7, 8 whether biological factors can account for the intergenerational transmission of intimate partner violence, both within an individual lifetime and across generations, remains under-researched. 4, 5 To date, the prevailing etiological theories proposed to explain intimate partner violence have emphasized two prominent factors: (i) the cultural environment, particularly the impact of male dominance in society (Cultural theory), or (ii) social learning, whereby children learn patterns of violence by watching relevant early figures-parents in particular-that are reproduced in intimate partner relationships in adulthood, which enables violence to be transmitted from one generation to the next (Social learning theory). 1, 3 Although the roots of partner violence may be complex, childhood exposure to violence, either as a victim or a witness, has been identified as a major risk factor for intimate violence perpetration. 1, 2 Despite increasing efforts to develop prevention and intervention programs that address intimate partner violence, evidence of positive outcomes is scarce because of an insufficient understanding of its causes. Intimate partner violence, particularly against women, is a pervasive worldwide phenomenon with serious societal and public health consequences for individuals, families, communities and societies. With the caution required when translating animal work to humans, our findings extend current psychosocial explanations of the transgenerational transmission of intimate partner violence by strongly suggesting an important role for biological factors. Both the females that cohabited with the stressed males and those that cohabited with their male offspring showed behavioral (including anxiety- and depression-like behaviors), physiological (decreased body weight and basal corticosterone levels) and neurobiological symptoms (increased activity in dorsal raphe serotonergic neurons in response to an unfamiliar male) resembling the alterations described in abused and depressed women. Their offspring also showed increased aggression toward females in the absence of postnatal father–offspring interaction or any other exposure to violence. Using an animal model devoid of human cultural factors, we showed that male rats became highly aggressive against their female partners as adults after exposure to non-social stressful experiences in their youth. A major risk factor for violence perpetration is childhood exposure to violence, prompting the proposal that social learning is a major contributor to the transgenerational transmission of violence. Intimate partner violence is a ubiquitous and devastating phenomenon for which effective interventions and a clear etiological understanding are still lacking.

Therefore, it is difficult for steel ships to float if they are made only of steel. The density of water, however, is much lower, at 1g/cm 3. Its overall density is approximately 7.85g/cm 3. As less dense things float, the balloon will rise. However, as soon as the particles are heated, they move more vigorously, and as they bump into each other more often, they become less dense. Did you know that a hot-air balloon has to be heated before it flies? This is because the particles inside the balloon are just as dense as the particles outside the balloon at the beginning. How exactly? Look at the diagram on the right. They work the same way: using the differences in density to hurl the balloon up. A hot air balloon is just like those you ride in amusement parks. Once upon a time, when aeroplanes were yet to be invented, the only way to soar through the skies was to ride in a hot-air balloon. Let's get to a topic with no sums: how vehicles work.īalloons The engine of a hot-air balloon You can refer to the diagram on the left, which shows a container with all the solids and liquids in it.īalloons, ships and submarines Since Solids W and Y are both on the bottom, they are on the same level-they both sink in liquid A. Solid X < Liquid B < Water < Solid Z < Liquid A < Solid W < Solid Y We will round off to three significant figures here. Note that we use division rather than fractions here. If all these things are put into a measuring cylinder (or any container for that matter), and nothing dissolves, what will be the order of their altitude, from top to bottom? The following is a table of the name, mass and volume of some liquids and solids. Unfortunately, we need a bit of math here. In other words, whether an object will float or sink in a certain liquid (or gas) depends on their density with relation to the density of the liquid. On the contrary, the feathers' density is probably less than 1g/cm 3, which makes them float. The density of water is 1 g/cm 3, so if the density of the lead is more than 1g/cm 3, it has to sink. As there is the same mass stuffed in a smaller space, it must be denser. While their mass may be the same (1kg), the volume of lead is a lot smaller than that of feathers. But what if you put the lead and feathers into a pond? Will they both sink?Īctually, no. What does all that have to do with floating or sinking? Here's an old riddle: which one is heavier, 1kg of lead or 1kg of feathers? Yes, that's right, they are the same. Note: You can also swap them around like you do in maths to find the mass or volume when you have the density.įloating and sinking This formula is very important, so we will put it here:ĭensity = Mass Volume By now you may have deduced that the method of finding density is mass over volume. What are the units of density then? The units of density are always constructed by the unit of the mass, a forward-slash, and then the unit of the volume. That is also the density in there: density is the amount of matter in a specific space the volume is usually represented by an invisible '1'. Remember that in your room, there are (on average) 4 kg in every cubic meter. Then, in every average cubic metre, there would be 30 kg ÷ 7.5 m 3 = 4 kg. If your room is 1.5m × 2m × 2.5m, and your mass is 30kg, then there are 30kg in every 1.5m × 2m × 2.5m = 7.5 m 3. Therefore, you are the only thing with mass in it. You are the only one inside the empty, airless room. Imagine you are in an enclosed room, say your bedroom. Mass is measured in the units kilogram, gram and milligram. Do you remember that there are always spaces between particles? 'Mass' does not include the spaces between the particles, while 'volume' does. 'Mass' means how much of matter there is. To win the game, you must completely fill the empty grid with correct words that correspond to clues. If you’re stuck on a particular clue, you can solve another one that has overlapping letters to help the clue you’re stuck on. You can solve an Across or Down clue at any time. Thus, the two parts of a puzzle are really one puzzle, which is solved using logic and lateral thinking skills. Across clues can overlap with a Down clue. Down clues tell you the word is placed vertically. Across clues have numbers that tell you where to look, where the word is placed horizontally. There are two kinds of clues: Across, for the horizontal clues, and Down, for the vertical clues. Each clue leads to a solution word, which fits in its respective space on the grid. The format is simple: a grid is laid out with numbered clues and blank spaces. Frequently Asked Questions How do you solve a crossword puzzle? Professionals use genograms to assess family history, identify behavior patterns, and explore how these factors may contribute to current challenges or issues within the family system. It goes beyond a simple family tree by incorporating information about emotional relationships, communication patterns, and other factors influencing family functioning. The primary purpose of it is to provide a comprehensive overview of family structures, patterns, and dynamics across multiple generations. Additional symbols may indicate specific characteristics, such as health conditions, emotional relationships, or significant life events. Standard symbols denote different family members, such as squares for males, circles for females, and multiple lines representing connections between them. The genogram typically includes symbols and lines representing various family members, their relationships, and significant events. This tool is commonly used in psychology, social work, and counseling to help individuals and professionals gain insight into family dynamics, intergenerational patterns, and the overall functioning of a family unit. Here’s how the positions are typically numbered:Įvery position has a different job to do in order to keep the team machine in tip-top shape. When you apply numbers to specific formations, you can better identify where players line up on the field. Soccer sometimes uses position numbers to help teach youth players about each role and create a universal language as they develop on the pitch.Ī number is assigned to each position. While watching professional soccer, you may hear a commentator declare that an athlete “plays like a number 10” even though they are “playing in the 6.” Don’t worry, there’s no crazy math formula involved - this simply refers to where a player is situated on the field.ĭid you know that the numbering of each position started in the 1920s? While not every coach uses this system, knowing position numbers may help inform your understanding of the game. Here, we look at a standard 11-vs.-11 game to show how defensive, midfield and offensive positions work based on the roles they play and the numbers assigned to them. Soccer positions and formations can vary based on several factors, including age group, league, coaching strategy and number of players allowed on the field. When everyone on the field does their job, the team can work together seamlessly and experience more fluid gameplay.
